Favourite Silent Hill Quotes

I’m going to talk about three, luckily, these three actually exist in the games. I have a somewhat strange habit of mis-remembering quotes, stressing words that weren’t, or making them up whole. Consider these two quotes ostensibly from Event Horizon.

“You won’t need knees where we’re going”, and “That’s not a load bearing structure … It is now”.

Favorite SIlent Hill Secondary Character

Angela Orosco.

A somewhat odd choice, I realise. Specifically the version with the motion and voice of Donna Burke (also played Claudia in the original Silent Hill 3) rather than the newer HD Collection voice. Donna Burke was specifically chosen to make Angela appear (even her clothing), act, and sound like an older woman, the idea being she was prematurely aged due to the abuse she has been through. She also has very awkward speech patterns for similar reasons. She acts strangely, she talks strangely, she conveys the character beautifully. Her line about how she sees Silent Hill, “For me, it’s always like this” on an impossibly steep burning staircase is brilliant.

Favourite Silent Hill Protagonist

It’s a tough pick betwixt Harry (Silent Hill 1 and Shattered Memories) and James (Silent Hill 2). I’m not keen on Heather (too annoying), or Henry (too much of the quiet ‘everyman’).

The newer protagonists are macho to unrealistic proportions and that rules them out immediately – with the exception of Shattered Memories Harry, but I have problems with the way he acts. Alex’s case was interesting because his bluster was partially due to his delusion.

Favourite Silent Hill Game

The short answer is Silent Hill 4: The Room. Notice that the title is not best Silent Hill game, simply the favourite.

Silent Hill 4: The Room is under-rated, weird, different, and most of all, combines creepiness and fear better than any other game I’ve seen. Even Silent Hill 2, which is a better game. That’s not to say, either, that there is nothing wrong with Silent Hill 4: The Room, although most of the things people complain about are imaginary.

The Silent Hill 30-Day Challenge

Inspired by the HellYeahSilentHill Tumblr, the idea is to write something about Silent Hill for each day of a full 30-day period. I won’t be quite doing the challenge as stated since it is somewhat of a Tumblr meme, and as such asks questions such as “Character you’d date”. I thought most of it would make an interesting series of posts though, and get me used to writing again after recuperating from a small operation.

So starting tomorrow, a month of posts (yes, 31, I will be changing the challenge) about Silent Hill.

Thanks, Sony!

Silent Hill: Book of Memories – A top-down … wait, what?

Perhaps Tomm Hulett shouldn’t be the one talking to Silent Hill fans. Every time he talks on the subject, it is as if millions of Silent Hill fans suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced I can’t help but think that he doesn’t really get Silent Hill. In fact, he first came to my attention when talking about the voice acting changes, and when he talked about the decision to only include Silent Hill 2 & 3 in the poorly-named Silent Hill HD Collection. I suspect he’s just not very comfortable speaking to the public since the perceived nervousness some commentators have written about is present in every video I’ve seen.
